About the census - Mō te tatauranga
The census is a survey of everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand. It gives us the most complete picture of life around the country, and in each of our communities.
What is the census - He aha te tatauranga
The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings is a nationwide survey held every five years. It is an official count of every person in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the places where they live or stay (dwellings). The census gives us all a complete picture of life around the entire country, and in each of our communities.
Stats NZ organises the census, with the help of every person in the country.
Who needs to do the 2023 Census - Me whakakī au i te tatauranga
All of us count. And because the census is so important, the law requires us all to do it.
If you will be in Aotearoa New Zealand on 7 March 2023, you must take part in the 2023 Census. This means you will need to complete census forms, or have someone help complete them for you. With the support of communities and people around the country, we aim to make that as easy as possible.
What is census data used for? - Ka whakamahia ngā rarauranga tatauranga mō te aha?
By doing the census, you create a better picture of what you, your family, and your community need. By knowing these needs, government agencies, councils, iwi, community groups and businesses can plan how to respond to them. Your census answers help groups like these help us all.
