Flagstaff Hill Residents Association - sharing the hidden gems of their area

The Flagstaff Hill Resident’s Association was founded in 1972 and is the oldest of the central Wellington residents’ associations.
Its area includes MacDonald Crescent, Dixon Street, Percival Street, The Terrace, Allenby Terrace and Boulcott Street. It’s an historic part of the city and there are some lovely, tucked away green and leafy places in ‘their patch’. Here’s a quick tour.

Flagstaff Hill Park

Keep walking past Terrace Gardens Park and climb more steps and you will come across this treasure which is Flagstaff Hill Park.

This park commemorates a historical event during the Mäori land wars.

There were always three Flagstaff Hill Parks but unfortunately the two on the waterfront, which had cannons, have been built over.

Terrace Gardens Park

Head to the lane beside St Mary’s of Angels Church in Boulcott Street and the lane is called O’Reily Avenue. Head past the Boulcott Sites Hotel and Global Trek Backpackers and walk up the steps. Instead of turning right up Allenby Terrace, turn left and go past the Terrace Gardens Park.

Terrace Gardens Park has two giant Elm trees and so is always cool and shady spot during summer. The back wall has a tiled mosaic mural showing a harlequin clown which is based on real historical events of the area when a founding member of the residents association in the 70s and 80s dressed as the harlequin clown for his children in the community picnics.

Gordon Morrison Park

Keep following the walkway and steps around to the third hidden park which is called Gordon Morrison Park after the person who donated it to the council.

It’s looking a bit overgrown at the moment but our Residents’ Association has plans to try and clean it up.
