After three years of significant earthquake strengthening and refurbishment, the jewel in the crown of Wellington’s live performance scene is reopening. The St James Theatre will once again host dance, drama, opera, comedy, and music in Wellington. To celebrate the return to Courtenay Place, Wellington City Council is hosting a series of fun, free events for the whole whānau to enjoy. Head on down to the theatre district and join the party!

Friday 1 July, 5.30pm-10pm

Wellington’s vibrant theatre district around Courtenay Place will be lit up, along with a projection on the St James Theatre.

St James Theatre public open day and evening celebrations

Saturday 2 July, 10am-8pm (lights on until 10pm)

St James Theatre will be open to the public from 10am-4pm on Saturday 2 July. Join performers from A Slightly Isolated Dog for a tour of the venue. Tour groups will leave from St James foyer approximately every 15 minutes.

Celebrations will continue into the afternoon with a performers parade, followed by a closed-off street party outside the venue from 5.30pm. BATS Theatre, Circa Theatre, Hannah Playhouse, and Te Auaha will also be opening their doors for behind-the-scenes tours.
