City Safety

Inner City Wellington is concerned with the recent rise of violence and anti-social behaviour within Te Aro and Wellington Central. To create a Wellington that is welcoming for all, we work on several initiatives to ensure that our residents are protected from harm in their communities.

Eyes On

This is a successful 'prevention first' crime initiative was launched in 2015 by Inner City Wellington in partnership with Police and Wellington City Council and now has over 250 members. Initially covering Cuba Street only it soon spread throughout the CBD and beyond as retailers were quick to realise its benefits in reducing store theft and enhancing the safety among the retail community.

The closed communication network allows businesses to share critical information on shoplifters and anti-social behaviour in real time via text or email. Membership is free and there are added advantages such as the theft prevention workshops and regular updates from Police on persons of interest and crime statistics.

Intoxication in the city

The anti-social behaviour of particular concern to inner-city residents is the misues of alcohol, drinking in the streets, drunken behaviour and the associated noise, nuisance, mess (bottles, vomit, urine) and disturbance late at night and early in the morning. This has an impact on the public’s enjoyment of amenities and their environment.

We have been very involved in the area, most significantly in its appeal of the WCC Provisional Local Alcohol Policy back in 2014.  Since then we have been a member of the WCC-initiated Alcohol Forum, which aims to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to reduce anti-social behaviour and harms arising from alcohol.
