New cameras operating at bus stops in Courtenay Place from Monday 8 November

The Council’s Parking Services team wants to let people know the following:

“As part of Wellington City Council’s wider programme of work towards making our city safer, the Council has installed three static cameras in the bus stops on Courtenay Place between Cambridge Terrace and Allen Street. This is in response to requests the Council have received to improve the ability of buses to safely access the bus stops at the upper end of Courtenay Place between Cambridge Terrace and Allen Street, particularly during peak hours.

Taxis, ride-share and commuters are regularly using these bus stops as a waiting/pick up/drop off area, which means that scheduled buses are sometimes unable to use the bus stops, making it unsafe for passengers to get on and off the buses. This also causes congestion as the buses are forced to use the road as a bus stop. A slip lane taxi stand on Courtenay Place opposite these bus stops has been opened to provide a safe alternative for taxis to wait and collect passengers.

In conjunction with this, three static cameras have been installed on Courtenay Place to allow the Council with the ability to monitor and enforce these bus stops only being used by buses. So far, these cameras haven’t been used for infringing people.

From Monday 8 November 2021 onwards, these cameras will come into operation. The Council will issue warnings from 8 – 21 November 2021 before issuing infringement notices from Monday 22 November 2021 for parking in the Courtenay Place bus stops. These camera’s will be in operation 24 hours, 7 days a week.”
